What a commission on new clients costs

Some booking apps charge you a percentage of the first appointment with each client who finds you through their search. Others charge a fee on every booking. On one appointment it looks small. Over a year it adds up.

An example, with made-up numbers. Say your service costs $45, the app takes 20% of the first appointment with a new client, and 8 new clients book you through the app each month:

• $45 × 20% = $9 for each new client
• 8 new clients × $9 = $72 a month
• $72 × 12 months = $864 a year, before card fees and before the app's own plan

Those numbers are only an example. To see what you really pay, check your app's fee page and your last few statements.

What to check in the app you use now

• Who counts as a new client. If a regular of yours finds your page through the app's search, find out whether you pay a fee on them.
• What the fee is charged on. The service price, the tip, or both, and whether there's a minimum per client.
• Whether fees stack. A commission, a card fee and a fee for a faster transfer can all come out of the same appointment.
• Whether you can turn it off, and what you lose if you do.

The same example, on Bookeao Pro

With the same 8 new clients a month at $45, you would pay $0 in commission. Your cost is the plan, $14.99 a month, whether 8 new clients book you or 80.

If one of those clients pays $45 with a card tapped on your phone, Stripe's fee is $1.37 (2.7% of $45 is $1.215, plus 15¢), and you keep $43.63. If you wait for the free transfer, getting the money to your bank costs nothing. An instant transfer of $200 would cost $3.00.

Cash and ATH Móvil payments you record go into the same earnings, so the numbers show your whole business, not only the card payments.
